As of this week (the week of Oct. 4th) the Coffee House will be closed Friday – Sunday. The decision to close the operation on Fridays wasn’t an easy one, but in discussions with the Coffee House management team and student leaders it was clear that with our current staffing challenges a 5-day operating schedule was not sustainable. Monday through Thursday hours of operation will stay unchanged.
Although our customers have been extremely understanding of our limitations, the attrition in student employees we’ve already experienced is making it harder to keep up with the significant demand for our services. In order to ensure we are able to adequately serve our customers we will be realigning schedules to allow for more robust staffing Monday – Thursday. This will make for a better customer experience, albeit on one fewer day per week, while also addressing CoHo employee workload, morale and mental health.
The hope is that this reduction in service days is temporary as we work to increase our student employee numbers. The expectation is that our next large cohort of student employees will be on-boarded in the coming weeks and ready to work soon thereafter, allowing for a return to Monday – Friday service. Myself and the management team will continue to evaluate our capabilities and make the best decision possible for our customers and our student staff.
